Engagement Session Guideline: Tips to Prepare for Your Session

After many amazing engagement sessions and countless wonderful memories captured, I decided to create this Engagement Session Guideline to help you prepare and make the most out of your session. Whether you’re camera-shy or just want to ensure the best possible experience, these tips will set the stage for stunning photos and a fun, stress-free session.

I’ve broken it down into a few simple rules to help us work together seamlessly and capture the magic of your unique love story. Remember, an engagement session isn’t just about taking photos—it’s about celebrating your connection, having fun, and building trust before your big day.

Rule No. 1: Trust Your Photographer

You chose me as your engagement (and possibly wedding) photographer for a reason—now let me take care of the rest. My job is to guide you, help you feel comfortable, and showcase the natural chemistry between you and your partner. You don’t need to be a model; none of the couples you see in my portfolio are! What they all have in common is trust in my process, which lets us create those relaxed, authentic, and stunning photos together.

Rule No. 2: Choose a Meaningful Location

The location you choose for your engagement session plays a huge role in the final photos. I can always suggest some incredible spots around Austin and the surrounding areas (Zilker Park, Mount Bonnell, or even downtown murals for that urban vibe), but ideally, the location should have meaning for you as a couple.

It could be where you first met, your favorite hiking spot, the café where you had your first date, or a place that reflects your shared hobbies or personality. Picking a place that resonates with you will make the session feel more personal and authentic.

Rule No. 3: What to Wear for Your Engagement Photos

Choosing the right outfits can make all the difference! Here are my tried-and-true tips:

  • Stick to solid colors and avoid busy prints that can distract from the focus: you two!
  • Coordinate, don’t match. Complementary colors work beautifully, but avoid being overly matchy-matchy.
  • Bring two outfits: one dressy and one more casual. This gives us variety in the photos.
  • Comfort is key: If you’re wearing heels, bring a comfy pair of shoes for walking between locations.
  • Be yourself: Wear clothes that reflect your personality and make you feel confident.
  • Flatter your body type: Choose outfits that highlight your best features.

Rule No. 4: Accessorize and Personalize

Accessories add a lot of character and creativity to your photos. Bring along items that represent your relationship or things you love doing together. Here are some ideas:

  • A stylish hat, scarf, or unique jewelry
  • Props like a picnic blanket, your dog, or even a favorite board game
  • Items tied to a theme—whether it’s casual, romantic, or adventurous

Make this session your own by planning elements that reflect your personalities. The more thought you put into making it about you two, the more meaningful and special the photos will feel.

Rule No. 5: Don’t Forget the Basics

Small details can make a big difference! Be sure to pack:

  • A bottle of water to stay hydrated
  • A hairbrush or comb for quick touch-ups
  • A pocket mirror for last-minute checks
  • Comfortable walking shoes, even if you plan to wear heels in the photos

Relax and Enjoy the Moment

Your engagement session is about celebrating your love story, so let go of any stress, laugh a lot, and just be yourselves. I’ll be there to guide you every step of the way. It’s also a wonderful opportunity for us to get to know each other better before the wedding day, which makes the entire experience more enjoyable and relaxed.

Let’s create something beautiful together. To book your engagement session, contact me today! I’m now based in Austin, Texas, and I can’t wait to capture your love story in this vibrant city and its surrounding areas.

Warmly,
