A Romantic Canyonwood Ridge Wedding in Dripping Springs, Texas

There is something special about a spring wedding in the Texas Hill Country, and Stephanie and Niels’ March wedding at Canyonwood Ridge in Dripping Springs was filled with beautiful scenery, heartfelt moments and so much joy.

Stephanie and Niels traveled from Alabama to celebrate their wedding surrounded by their Texas family and friends. From their emotional first look to their beautiful outdoor ceremony, sunset portraits and energetic reception, their day was full of exactly the kind of moments I love capturing as an Austin wedding photographer—natural, emotional and completely personal.

Getting Ready at Canyonwood Ridge

The day began inside Canyonwood Ridge as Stephanie got ready surrounded by the people closest to her. The bridal suite was filled with soft natural light, making it a wonderful space for photographing the quiet moments before the ceremony.

I always enjoy this part of a wedding day because there are so many little details and emotions happening at once—the finishing touches of hair and makeup, jewelry, flowers and those meaningful moments with family before everything begins.

One of my favorite photographs from the morning was Stephanie with her mom after she was completely ready. These quieter interactions often become some of the most meaningful wedding photographs because they capture relationships rather than just the events of the day.

An Emotional First Look

Stephanie and Niels chose to have a first look before their Canyonwood Ridge wedding ceremony, and it was such a beautiful moment.

There is something incredibly special about giving a couple a few minutes together before the ceremony begins. Away from the guests and excitement, they are able to see one another for the first time and simply enjoy the moment.

Their first look was sweet, relaxed and emotional, and it gave us a chance to create some beautiful portraits around the property before everyone arrived for the ceremony.

An Outdoor Texas Hill Country Ceremony

The open ceremony space at Canyonwood Ridge creates a gorgeous backdrop without needing much additional decoration. The landscape becomes part of the ceremony itself, especially on a clear Texas day.

One particularly touching moment was Stephanie walking down the aisle with her father. These are the moments I am always watching for as a wedding photographer—the expressions between people, nervous smiles, parents trying not to cry and all the small reactions happening around the couple.

The venue offers both an outdoor ceremony location and an indoor chapel, giving couples options depending on the weather and the atmosphere they want for their wedding day.

Wedding Portraits in the Texas Hill Country

After the ceremony, we explored the grounds for Stephanie and Niels’ wedding portraits.

Photographing weddings in Dripping Springs and the Texas Hill Country gives me the opportunity to combine romantic portraits with the landscape. Instead of every photograph being tightly posed, I love allowing couples to move, walk together and interact naturally.

Stephanie’s flowing wedding dress looked especially beautiful against the green landscape, while Niels’ soft gray wedding attire complemented the colors of the Hill Country perfectly.

Some of my favorite images came from simply letting them enjoy being together—holding hands, laughing and dancing for a few moments while I photographed everything around them.

A Beautiful Sunset Session at Canyonwood Ridge

Later in the evening, we stepped outside again as the sun began to disappear behind the hills.

This is one of my favorite parts of photographing a Canyonwood Ridge wedding.

The light became softer and warmer, creating a completely different feeling from the portraits we photographed earlier in the afternoon. Stephanie and Niels were finally able to slow down for a few minutes after the excitement of the ceremony and spend some time together.

Their sunset photographs feel intimate and relaxed, and they are a perfect example of why I always encourage my couples to set aside even ten or fifteen minutes for sunset portraits when the wedding timeline allows.

Texas sunsets can change incredibly quickly, but when everything comes together, that last warm light creates some of the most romantic photographs of the entire wedding day.

An Emotional Father-Daughter Dance and a Wild Dance Floor

The reception brought a completely different energy.

One of the most emotional moments of the evening was Stephanie’s dance with her father. After photographing weddings for many years, father-daughter dances are still one of those moments that can be incredibly moving. The emotions are rarely limited to the two people dancing—you can see them in the faces of family members watching from around the room as well.

Once the formal dances were finished, the celebration really started.

The dance floor became lively very quickly, with friends and family filling the reception and celebrating late into the evening. I love photographing this part of a wedding in a documentary style—watching for expressions, movement, laughter and all of the unpredictable moments that happen once everyone forgets about the camera.

For me, wedding photography isn’t only about beautiful portraits. It is about telling the complete story of the day, from the quiet anticipation while getting ready to the completely unplanned moments happening on the dance floor.

Ending the Night With a Sparkler Exit

Stephanie and Niels finished their Canyonwood Ridge wedding with a sparkler exit surrounded by their family and friends.

Everyone lined up outside the venue holding sparklers while the newlyweds made their way through the crowd.

And instead of simply walking through, Stephanie and Niels gave everyone one final memorable photograph with a dramatic dip and kiss surrounded by sparkling lights.

It was the perfect ending to a wedding filled with emotion, laughter and celebration.
